TNT’s award-winning production of Hamlet returns to the international stage with many members of the original cast. It has thrilled audiences and critics from East Asia to Central America, from the Middle East to the British Isles. The production skilfully blends the radically different quarto and folio versions, aiming to illuminate the world’s most fascinating theatre text rather than impose a superficial interpretation.

Hamlet is revealed as a troubled young man who can trust no one—not even the ghost of his father. His attempts to find a moral or meaningful response to his father’s murder and his mother’s remarriage to the chief suspect end in tragedy. On the way to its violent climax, the play explores the human condition with extraordinary depth. Most of its characters are performing a lie: old friends are spies, Claudius plays the good stepfather, Gertrude the caring parent, Polonius the honest broker, and doomed Ophelia pretends she is alone with her former lover. The greatest actor of all is Hamlet, who performs his own illusory madness. Nothing is what it seems; there are no fixed meanings, and the world drives those who try to solve its riddles towards madness.

Director Paul Stebbings emphasises this theatricality through life-size puppets, highly theatrical ghosts and comedy interwoven with tragedy, as Shakespeare intended. This is not a play about inaction, but about a constant search for truth and justice. Thomas Johnson and Richard Middle’s powerful music is sung and played by the actors and woven through the text like a film score. The result offers audiences a compelling way to engage with one of the greatest stories ever told.
